Different Types of Bees
Different types of bees are tiny stinging insects that play a major role in the ecological balance. They are the chief pollinators and ensure continuity of the food chain. They also maintain and propagate biodiversity, and have been doing so for almost 100 million years. The value of pollination done by bees is estimated to be around 16 billion dollars in the US alone. Bees are thus highly crucial for the natural environment (and have also become crucial for many aspects of human life).
Did you know that one-third of the human food supply depends on pollination by bees? And did you know that bees are responsible for 30 billion dollars a year in crops? And contribute 24 billion dollars to the US economy?
Without bees, every stratum of life would starve!
But can they really be hard-to-remove pests?
Different Types of Bees amongst Humans
Although generally harmless, bees can sometimes pose a threat to humans if they build nests in or near inhabited buildings. Even though the world would face more problems due to the absence of bees than their presence, it cannot be disputed that bees can also be dangerous and stubborn pests. Bee stings send hundreds of people to the hospital every day. Some bees can also cause structural damage to buildings. It is essential to know how to deal with bees in an environmentally friendly manner. For this, being able to identify the different types of bees is a necessity (to know what course of action to take).
Here are a few different types of bees –
- BUMBLE BEES
Color: Black and yellow (with fuzz)
Size: 1”
Habitat: they build their nests above/on the ground/grass
Do bumble bees sting? Yes, if their nest threatened or attacked.
Importance: Chief pollinators.
CARPENTER BEES
Color: Blue-black
Size: about 1”
Habitat: they are solitary insects that bore holes into decaying wood to house their young (can cause structural damage to buildings)
Do Carpenter Bees sting? Very rarely, but yes they can. The males do not have stingers, unlike the females (which do not use them often).
Importance: Pollinators of honeybee-ignored plants.
HONEY BEES
Color: Orange-brown, with brown colored bands
Size: about 1”
Habitat: they are social insects that live in highly organised hives
Do Honey Bees sting? Yes, if their hive is threatened or disturbed.
Importance: Chief pollinators (they travel long distances to collect nectars from different flowers to make honey, which is their food for the winter), producers of honey and beeswax (which are of commercial use to us).
KILLER BEES (Africanized Honey Bees)
Color: Golden yellow, with brown colored bands
Size: about 1”
Habitat: They build their nests in attics, chimneys, tall buildings and trees
Do Killer Bees sting? Yes. They come to sting as a group (causing more serious stings). They have also been known to chase the threat over quite a long distance.
Importance: Pollinators, producers of honey.
How do you get rid of Killer Bees?
Killer bees (commonly found in Florida; sometimes called Florida bees) are not more venomous than honeybees but are more easily provoked and tend to swarm-and-sting as a group. They can be removed using insecticide or smoke, but these methods are highly inadvisable and are mostly unsuccessful. Approaching a bee nest/hive on your own is almost always a bad idea. The best way to get rid of Killer Bees is to call upon a pest control service that can use eco-friendly ways to deal with the situation.
